11. Roel Meelkop aka Kapotte Muziek, Rotterdam/Niederlande

Thema: gesteinsbildende Prozesse ("(GRINDING TO A START)")

Brief Portrait:

Roel Meelkop (NL, 1963) studied visual arts before concentrating fully on sound. In the early 1980’s he started doing music, which ultimately led to the founding of THU20 in 1986. In the years following, Meelkop started to record solo works as well. In 1995, he joined Kapotte Muziek for live performances and in 1997 he founded GOEM, together with Frans de Waard.

Nowadays his work also includes sound installations. Most of Meelkop’s work can be described as minimalist soundscapes with an edge. Using any available source material, he creates intricate electro-acoustic sound pieces that require some effort from the listener, but reward that effort.

Statement:

The performance "(GRINDING TO A START)" by Roel Meelkop will not make any specific use of geological elements (such as stone, water, wind, fire etc.), although they may be used in some parts. More interesting for Meelkop are the processes that create these elements: grinding, crunching, pressurising, shifting, layering etc. These processes are considered by Meelkop to be much the same as the process of creating music, which is a slow process that involves a lot of the methods and elements mentioned above. The similarity to geological processes is actually quite obvious and doesn’t need to be taken too literally.
