6. NÍD (Jürgen Eberhardt, Bremen/BRD; Chris Sigdell, Basel/Schweiz;
Oswin Czerwinsky, München/BRD)

Thema: Erdbeben ("Earshattering soundquakes -
Research into the musical qualities of the noises of earthquakes")

Brief portrait:

NÍD-curses were a method to bring a depth to the Old Norse concept of honor and shame by challenging conventional understanding. Putting them into a formal structure gave them a recognized place in a society, which in a span of a few hundred years had gone from heavily egalitarian to highly hierarchical structures. A living tradition, by which the least respected could reveal anyone else to be no better than they were could undermine the structures which had just developed. As a result, strict laws were enacted against these insults, and the practice became confined to literature. This has left us with a colorful, if bizarre selection of writings, which preserve this practice along with other, more acceptable forms of verse and prose...

NÍD is an experimental group that is trying to challenge conventional concepts and structures of electronic music by experimenting with the source of the sound. Their music is created on the spot, thus making each performance a genuine and unrepeatable event. The music itself may be described as de-constructive sound-sculptures, improvised aural art, or brooding and disturbing ambient music - it has been compared to underwater-journeys or a pathway to ones inner self.

NÍD was founded in 1995. Over the years NÍD have performed in art-galleries, rock-clubs, bars, water-reservoirs and cinemas, as well as at industrial festivals and in record-shops. In 1998, they were invited to play onboard the MS Stubnitz, when it was anchored in the harbor of Stockholm (Sweden) as part of the "European Culture Capital" festivities. They were also invited to the 2001 Six And More & R:IP jubilees to improvise together with 30 other electronic and free-jazz musicians.

NÍD releases are various and varied, keeping with the spirit of improvisation and spontaneity. Check their growing discography.

The amount of creativity is unlimited - take your pick!

Statement:

NíD and earthquakes - a strange but fascinating symbiosis.
