Künstler-Porträts und Statements 9. Giancarlo Toniutti, Udine/Italien Thema: Flusslandschaften ("itaomáchip ta kune..., chikáp ta kune..." ("I would be boat..., I would be bird...") Bathytropic Geoacoustic Site)
Brief Portrait: Giancarlo Toniutti, born in Udine (1963), researcher in morphology and anthropology fields (linguistics, acoustics, material cultures etc.) and composer of experimental electroacoustic sound-works. Basically. Since 1979 he has published several sound-works [a.o. epigènesi (1987), Tahta Tarla (1993, with Andrew Chalk), *KO/USK- (1997, with Siegmar Fricke)], several essays [a.o. Cosmogony Building via Map-Points (in Tahta Tarla), Preindoeuropean Strata (in *KO/USK-), ...qerratararcitaqamiu... (...rise suddenly in the air...) Space as a Cultural Substratum (in Site of Sound, edited by B.LaBelle & S.Roden), ovdalazzii: (Sámi-Suomi) Geocultural and Ecosystemic Patterning (in :coyot: by mnortham)], and realized some live sound-site [arghahytaan tehiinneex (with reins on the spine) Synclinal Geoacoustic Site (Topolò 1998), gölöq'unt'ist'a k'ic'iq'unt'ist'a (they run a lot they run a little) Endorheic Geoacoustic Site (Palazzolo dello Stella, 2000, with Giorgio Tomasini)] and so on, currently.
Statement: By placing 10 sound-sources into an (architectural) space, we will define a specific sound-site, i.e. an ecosystem whose boundaries are defined by the sounds themselves. In this case, this indoor sound-site, will be created via the installation onto the ceiling of room 202 at the Messehof, in Leipzig, of 10 loudspeakers acting as independent sound-sources. The sounds coming from these speakers will be directed parallel to the ceiling surface, so that the volumetric space of the room will be invested by (mostly) refracted, "indirect" sounds. The listener will thus be immersed (under the sonic "surface-level") in a sonic environment, where no single point (both horizontally and vertically speaking) will be hierarchically predominant. Each single point in the room will thus be a unique listening focus, where a peculiar pattern of sound articulation will be created by the specific local interactions of direct and indirect sounds coming from each single sound-source (loudspeaker). All sounds are derived from single field-recordings of forced water-channels. The title of this project is in the Ainu language.
